The great biological mixing bowl

Humans, animals, the environment and disease-causing microbes are interacting faster than ever before in increasingly closer proximity. Growth in the human population, concentrated animal production, and transportation networks, along with deforestation and the depletion of natural resources, are all contributing to disease outbreaks. Managing this complex and interdependent relationship requires leadership and the realignment of partnerships between government, community organizations, the private sector, academia, and individuals to protect local and global health.
