Anthony Inguane and Africaworks:
Small farm agriculture in South Mozambique

Africa is one of the most vulnerable regions to climate change due to extreme poverty, frequent natural disasters such as droughts and floods, and agricultural systems heavily dependent on rainfall.  Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest percentage of undernourished individuals - 40% of the total population - and there has been little progress in reducing hunger in the last decades.

Mozambique is a country in Sub-Saharan Africa with a population of around 20 million. Eighty percent of its inhabitants live in rural areas and depend on subsistence agriculture for food.

The southern region of Mozambique is characterized by a semi-arid climate, with precipitation of about 400-600 mm per year, and agriculture is practiced with very little rainfall.

Over the last few years the region has been profoundly affected by climate changes, resulting in a decline in food production and worsening malnutrition. Droughts are negatively affecting both the people and their animals, such as cows and goats.

Africaworks is a national organization created with the objective of promoting local development through sustainable programs of agriculture. We provide technical support and equipment for farmers in rural communities in Gaza province, and facilitate the group formation into official associations.

Through its agribusiness program Africaworks seeks to help and incentivize the farmers along the Limpopo River valley, introducing agriculture based on an irrigation system.

Africaworks is working with 80 farmers organized into an association with a strong leadership structure in Guija District in Gaza province. The association has a farm of 16 hectares, 2000 square meters for each member. The main crops produced are food staples, such as corn and beans. Food produced in excess of what is needed for consumption is used to feed livestock, or in exchange for field labor.
