LOCAL ACTION GLOBAL HEALTH - PILOT PROJECT - 2008 - # 1 / 5
Chilean youth empowered as messengers and future leaders in human, animal and environmental health

Rural parts of Chile are faced with a dwindling number of farm workers, a reliance on locally-grown food sources, and the decreasing usability of land due to contamination and erosion.
In this project, educators engaged teachers, young adults and children to urge stewardship and the management of vectors that aid disease proliferation. Key to the success of this project was empowering children as health ambassadors, communicating within their communities.
In the full report below, project leaders offer insight on working with schools and faculy, how to motivate families to be good stewards, and ways to engage youth as message bearers and eventual leaders.
An additional outcome is to improve the employment outlook in the Canela region in Chile.
